How To Create A Fall Living Room

September 15, 2024

Fall is the most wonderful time of the year. Well, all year is the most wonderful time, but there’s something so special about the warmth and coziness of fall. One aspect about fall that’s so much fun is fall decor, and getting to update and change your space to match the change of seasons. I personally love seeing all the fall decorations and creating a warm, fall space, so I wanted to create a how to guide to create a cozy fall living room with a few, simple changes. Let’s dive in!

The Three Elements of Fall Decor

In my opinion, there are three things you need to create that quintessential fall look: texture, warmth, and fall-specific decor pieces. Those three elements can help take your space from it’s everyday look to a look that’s perfectly warm and cozy for fall without having to go too crazy in the fall decor aisle.

So, with these three elements in mind, let’s go over how to create that fall living room with product links and examples below!

Add Texture

The first element we’re going to talk about is texture. Adding texture in design is essentially adding things that are made with different fabrics, materials, and patterns to help add some dimension to a space.

For example, if you think of a tan couch with tan pillows, it might look a little boring or flat. But if you picture that same tan couch with a patterned throw pillow, a velvet throw pillow, and a fuzzy sherpa throw, it brings more life to the design.

And if we think about fall fashion, we like to bundle up and layer with fuzzy sweaters, wool coats, flannel shirts, and so on. These are all ways we add texture and dimension to our fall wardrobe, and decorating for fall follows this same principle.

So how do you apply this concept to your fall living room? It’s pretty simple. You can add texture with:

  • Throw pillows
  • Blankets
  • Rugs
  • Greenery/Faux Florals
  • Layering various elements
FROM WEST OF MAIN

Here’s a great example of a fall living room with a lot of texture and detail. The mixture of different throw pillows, the faux floral arrangement, candles, coffee table books, and natural materials help to make this space especially cozy and welcoming for fall. Having so many different textures and materials layered together, really creates a lived-in, cozy space.

Add Warmth

And you might say, well what’s the difference between texture and warmth? And they do go hand in hand. But for fall specifically, I like to bring up warmth as it’s own topic. When we think of fall, we think of the beautiful array of fall leaves, with their deep reds, oranges, and yellows, or the bright orange of pumpkins and gourds. This is the warmth I’m talking about and really focuses more on a color story and bringing in elements we see in nature. This can include:

  • Incorporating warm, rich colors
  • Adding natural or mixed materials
  • Bringing greenery into your space
  • Layer different textures and colors
  • Adding ambiance with candles and lighting

Add Fall-Specific Decor

And last but not least, fall-specific decor pieces can help tie things together and add that extra punch of fall to your space. And this doesn’t have to be an over-the-top array of pumpkins and plaid, it can be a couple subtle touches that help to bring the season inside. Some examples would be:

  • Ceramic pumpkins on the fireplace mantel
  • Fall-themed coffee table book
  • A fall-themed pillow
  • Fall floral arrangement
  • Wall art with warm tones and fall colors

This example from Making Highview Home shows just how simple creating a fall living room can be. With some throw pillows of various textures and materials, a fall candle, a floral arrangement, and some pumpkin pillows you can easily apply all three elements to your space and create a fall living room with a few simple swaps.
