Our living room is kind of boring. And by kind of boring, I mean really boring. I love the white walls, the fireplace, the wood floors, the amount of space we have, but we haven’t done anything to accentuate any of it, or even make it reflect our personal style. And as someone that loves design and decorating, it can be a little annoying to walk into a space in your home and be bummed out.
So, after living here for over two years, this living room makeover is at the top of my to-do list and I’ve finally put together a plan that I think will pull the space together. Now I just need the money for all of the things I picked. Let’s dive in to the plan now!
Our Living Room Today
I call this our living room, but as you can see from the pictures, we actually use this as our family room too. I don’t know if you can tell but our couch is 11 feet long, and it won’t fit in what’s supposed to be the family room (trust me, we tried), so this has become the room for everything. And our dining room is also connected to this space, so a lot goes on in here, and none of it reflects our personal style.
When we moved in over two years ago, we were moving from a small, modern apartment, so we didn’t really have a lot of furniture. And the furniture and art we did have worked for that space. But once we moved in here, things just didn’t work as well, and we’ve just been living with it. Cause as you may know, moving isn’t cheap and adjusting to new living expenses can take some time, so re-decorating and buying all new furniture isn’t always in the cards.
So, I’m really hoping that we can finally make some updates, and make this space feel more like our home, and not just an empty space.
Design Goals
I’m trying to be very intentional with what I select for the space, so here are some goals I set for our living room makeover:
Goal #1: Add warmth
My first goal is to add some warmth to the space, finally. We love the white walls and lighter colored floors, but when everything else is white or light-colored it just looks a little bland. So I really want to make it feel more inviting and lived in. We actually still have people come over and say, “Did you just move in?”, so definitely want to make it look like we actually live here after all this time.
Goal #2: Balance out the fireplace
My second goal is to balance out the wall with the fireplace. I love the fireplace, and our TV is here to stay, so something needs to counterbalance those two things. I’m thinking reading nook with a bookcase and chair, so fingers crossed it comes out how I envision.
Goal #3: Work around our couch
My third goal is to work around our couch because it is massive and we love it. It’s 11-feet long and easily fits like 5 or 6 people comfortably, so it isn’t going anywhere. In an ideal world, maybe we’d just order the same one again so it’s brand new, but for now, we’re keeping it and designing around it.
Living Room Makeover Moodboard
One thing that I started doing, even before starting this blog, is creating moodboards for a project before purchasing everything. There have been a couple times where I ordered something and it just didn’t work like I thought, so moodboards help me visualize everything before diving in.
I’m really excited for how this turned out and am even more excited to see it come to life in our living room. I’ve linked all the products below and laid them out a little differently so it’s easier to find what you’re looking for if something caught your eye too!
Living Room Makeover Products
1 – Amber Lewis x Loloi Getty Taupe/Ivory Wall Art // I saw this Amber Lewis piece last year and have had it on my list since. Hoping it will work on the wall next to the bookcase
2 – Pottery Barn Graham Media Console // Love this media cabinet! I’ve been looking for the perfect TV stand for so long and I think this is it
3 – Amber Lewis x Loloi Morgan Navy/Sand Area Rug // After years of having a medium-pile white rug in a high traffic area (which isn’t a great idea), it will be very nice to have something darker and low maintenance. And it’ll definitely help warm things up!
4 – Pottery Barn Modern Farmhouse Book Shelf // A lot of book shelves I found were very structured and I wanted something a little more open so that corner of the room doesn’t get too heavy. I think this book shelf will solve that while still looking great
5 – Crate & Barrel Edge Black Arch Wall Mirror // We already have this above the fireplace and love it!
6 – West Elm Penn Chair // I’ve been looking for a reason to get an olive green chair, and I think this will finally give me that chance
7 – Juniper Print Shop Monsoon Print // We’ll need something to balance out the fireplace mantel and this picture will be a great addition
8 – Crate & Barrel Unwind 2-Piece Sectional // We’re keeping our couch but I wanted to put something similar in color on the moodboard to help me visualize everything
9 – H&M Home Beige Glass Vase // I love ribbed glass and this vase will help round out the fireplace mantel
And that wraps up this post! Now time to save up for all this new furniture and decor! š
